Alice's never-ending, marathon birthday party

Alice planned this party a year ago in Asia. Then, 6 months ago, on a hike through the Nepalese Himalayas, she closed her birthday deal with me then proceeded to separately close the deal with Ken. Her plan: A full-day birthday party at Nanny and Papa's in Long Island, with at least one friend to spend the night, as her first slumber birthday party. Her meticulous planning was realized, and she was exhausted, grumpy, but very very happy at the end of the party.
First, ice skating at Port Jefferson Ice Rink. A beautiful, non-windy day to skate outdoors. Click HERE to see them skating.

Cousin Claudia came over on the Port Jeff ferry from Conneticut. She was very brave and did a sleepover with Alice for her birthday party.

Talk about brave! Amelia was barely skating and falling down loads at the start of the skating, and by the end, she was zipping around by herself.

This is why Alice knew Nanny and Papa's would be the perfect place for her party to unfold with perfection. Nanny and Papa asked for her every wish for the party then reported back to her by phone and email in advance, then delivered every promise with love. This sign was on their front door when I arrived with all 4 girls.

The requisite cupcake decorating. While we skated, Gracie was so excited about the next cupcake decorating phase of the party that she would zip around the ice, from girl to girl, asking each what candy she'd put on her cupcake. Click HERE to see them decorating.

Amelia's little brother is allergic to nuts, and she comes over daily asking for nutella and apples from us, since it's verbotten at her home. I'm convinced she's a nutella addict since it's taboo. She used nutella as her icing.

Gracie's signature party hearty face. This girl will lead the sorority parties, swinging from the rafters. She was both the life of Alice's party and the voice of reason. And, it was remarkable how she could fit an entire cupcake in her mouth, after daring us that she couldn't do it.

The party lunch table, decorated. Alice's requested spaghetti and meatballs were served.

The famous, generous Nanny and Papa, hosting the girls with grace and fun

Happy Birthday Alice! was sung

I kid you not, she stuck the entire thing in her mouth! One gulp. Next episode: Gracie swallowing whole goldfish pledge week.

Hot Tubbin like back in the 70's!
What? Is that sprinkler play in January? Alice completely lucked out and the girls went wet and wild!
Girls running through the sprinkler then back to hot tub then sprinkler then hot tub then...

Reminds me of Charlie's Angels. These girls love the hot tub!

Fun for kids (but oppressive for adults)! Fun 4 All is an indoor amusement park Alice selected for Phase 4 of her birthday party.

Alice Party, Phase 6: Homemade gelato. All girls were wiped out and just sat staring at the tv on the wall at the gelato store, eyes glazed over.

Claudia stayed for the slumber party, Phase 7. When they woke up in the morning, they were pampered with a little bed in front of the fire. Getting spoiled by Nanny and Papa on her birthday was a brilliant choice by Alice!

Alice's blog: I really liked making cup cakes, going ice skating, and going to Fun 4 All. I really like making and eating the cupcakes. My friends are Claudia, Gracie, Amelia, and me. I love all of them, especially me (haha!). When I got sushi before seeing Spiderman on Broadway, it was hard to try new things because I was so excited about seeing Spiderman. I thought it would not be so scary, but it really was scary, big and loud. At school, I brought in Brownies and everyone sang Happy Birthday, I couldn't get the smile off my face, and Mom and Dad took a million pictures! Click HERE to see Alice's class birthday party.

New Year's Eve with Tucks and Martinelli/Hortons Upstate!

The star of our New Year's Eve party -- Gigi! Oh, and her mom, Danielle, who was willing to submit to being a face painting guinea pig, with the result that the paint wouldn't come off her face completely, giving her a pink and blue glow.

Ready for a glow in the dark light saber fight: Darth Boom vs. Jedi Master Graeme

And, Young Padawan Jedi-in-training Leo showed up!
Only Matthew!

I'll save this photo to blackmail Courtney later. Now, Gigi looks like she's stepped out of the play "Cabaret," ready to dance, sing, and tip her hat on Broadway. You can tell the party's getting started!

Almost...

I gotta say, Gigi is just a bit too comfortable being the diva, primped, carried, pampered and put in the spotlight. And, she carries the microphone with aplomb.

The man who led the children with flashlight to bury their time capsule. More from Griffin below.

First, we served the Burmese Mohinga fish soup. Then, steak! Click HERE for video of us around the dinner table. Click HERE for video of us at our dance party, ringing in the New Year.

Ken's much-consulted, perfectly cooked, just pink enough steak.

Griffin blog: Dad bought a $166 steak. Danielle made amazing biscuits. We brought about 7 bottles of champagne. We had an enormous disco dance party and we buried a time capsule in which he hid our wishes for the year, and we'll reopen it when we return next New Year's. We took a boat out onto the lake which was mildly frozen. And, we cracked the ice with oars all around the dock. Kids beat the parents in a big soccer game.
